A nice photograph. "A pub on every corner" is how my father describes the old Scotswood Road. His tather was a butcher, so he must have known the cattle market and slaughterhouse well. He also talks about Blenheim Street, but that no longer exists, having been replaced by St. James' Boulevard. Seems a shame to have lost the old name. Calling it a boulevard makes the busy dual carriageway sound nicer than it is.
This section of road was originally called Hinde Street then the street in front of the cattle market was originally called Marlborough Street which led to Marlborough Crescent. This was in 1851 it all became Scotswood Road.
